Your Google Ads Aren't Showing? The 10 Causes, From Most to Least Likely

You search for your own keyword and your ad is not there. Before you panic or raise bids, walk this list: the 10 real reasons ads stop showing, ordered by how often they are the culprit, each with its 2-minute check.

"I searched for my keyword and my ad did not show up." It is probably the most common alarm in Google Ads, and the good news is that the cause is almost always one of ten things, most of them fixable in minutes. Walk this list in order: it goes from the most frequent culprit to the rarest.

First: stop searching for yourself on Google

Before the list, the golden rule: never diagnose by searching your own keywords on google.com. Google personalizes results, and if you repeatedly see your ad and never click, the system learns to stop showing it to you specifically. Worse, your searches generate impressions without clicks that slightly hurt your CTR. Use the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool instead, under Tools in your account: it shows whether your ad appears for a given search, location and device, without polluting anything, and when it does not appear it tells you why.

The 10 causes, in order of likelihood

1. Your daily budget is exhausted

Google spreads a limited budget through the day and simply sits out auctions once the pace is spent. If your campaign shows "Limited by budget", your ad is showing sometimes, just not every time. Check the campaign status column. This is the number one cause and it is not a malfunction: it is arithmetic.

2. Your Ad Rank is too low for page one

Ad Rank combines your bid and your quality signals. If both are modest in a competitive auction, your ad exists but lands beyond what anyone sees. The Ad Preview tool will say the ad is not showing; your impression share report will show a high "lost to rank" percentage. The fix is quality first (ad relevance, expected CTR, landing page), bid second.

3. A payment failed

When billing fails, everything stops silently. Check the Billing section: an expired or declined card halts all campaigns until resolved. It is embarrassingly common and takes two minutes to rule out.

4. The ad or keyword is disapproved or limited

Look at the Status column of your ads and keywords. "Disapproved" means policy rejection, "Eligible (limited)" means restricted circumstances. Each disapproval names its policy, and most are fixable with an edit and re-review.

5. Your targeting excludes the search you are testing

Location settings, language settings, ad schedule, device adjustments: any of them can exclude the exact scenario you are checking. If your schedule pauses ads at night and you test at 11pm, everything is working as configured. Verify the campaign settings against the exact case you are testing in Ad Preview.

6. Negative keywords are blocking your own keyword

A broad negative added during a cleanup can silently block searches you want. If you added "free" as a negative and your product page says "free trial", searches containing free will not trigger your ad. Cross-check your negative lists against the search you expect to win.

7. The keyword has too little search volume

Keywords marked "Low search volume" are paused by Google until demand exists. No amount of bidding fixes a search nobody performs. Broaden the match type or target a phrasing people actually use.

8. The campaign is still learning

After creating a campaign or making a big change, automated bidding recalibrates. Delivery during learning is uneven by design. If the change was recent, give it one to two weeks before concluding anything.

9. Scheduled dates, or a paused entity somewhere in the chain

Campaign end dates, a paused ad group, a paused campaign: delivery needs every level active. Scan the chain: campaign, ad group, keyword, ad. One pause anywhere silences everything below it.

10. The auction genuinely lacks inventory right now

Rare, but real: very narrow targeting (a small town plus strict schedule plus one exact keyword) can mean there are simply almost no auctions to enter. If your impression counts are near zero but everything above checks out, widen something.

The 5-minute diagnostic routine

  1. Ad Preview and Diagnosis with your exact keyword, location and device. Read the reason it gives.
  2. Status columns: campaign, ad group, keyword, ad. Anything not "Eligible" explains itself.
  3. Billing page: any failed payment stops everything.
  4. Impression share report: high "lost to budget" means cause 1, high "lost to rank" means cause 2.
  5. Change history: if delivery stopped on a specific date, whatever changed that day is your prime suspect.
