Dynamic Search Ads Have an Expiry Date: What AI Max Means for Your Account

Google is retiring Dynamic Search Ads: auto-upgrades to AI Max start in September 2026 and the full sunset is February 2027. What AI Max actually does, what you gain, what you lose, and how to migrate on your own terms.

If your account runs Dynamic Search Ads, put a date in your calendar: according to reporting by Marketing Dive and several PPC trade publications in July and August 2026, Google is taking AI Max for Search out of beta, legacy DSA campaigns start auto-upgrading to AI Max in September 2026, and DSA disappears completely in February 2027.

Auto-upgrade means exactly what it sounds like: if you do nothing, Google migrates you. And a migration you did not plan is a migration on Google's terms, not yours.

What AI Max actually is

AI Max is Google's automation layer for Search campaigns. Where DSA generated headlines and landing pages from your website for queries you did not explicitly target, AI Max goes several steps further: it expands your keyword targeting, generates ad text, and picks destination URLs, all with minimal manual input. Google's terms of service were updated on July 1, 2026 to formally authorize its systems to "format, select, or generate targets, ads, or destinations" on behalf of advertisers.

Google's own claim, repeated in its announcements, is that AI Max with its full feature set delivers on average 7 percent more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost per acquisition. Treat that as what it is: Google's average across many accounts, not a promise about yours.

On August 20, 2026, Google announced testing and planning tools for AI Max on its official blog: experiments that respect brand and location controls, multi-campaign A/B tests arriving from September, and a Performance Planner that predicts the effect of budget or target changes before you apply them.

What you lose, honestly

Control over exact wording: AI-generated headlines can misrepresent details of your offer if you do not review them. The responsibility for what the ad says remains yours, and that is stated in the updated terms.
Predictability of where traffic lands: URL expansion can send clicks to pages you did not intend to advertise. Exclusion lists exist, but only help if you maintain them.
The clean mental model of "this keyword triggered this ad". Reporting is improving, but automation layers are always harder to audit.

Migrate on your terms: a checklist

Do not wait for the September auto-upgrade. A manual migration lets you set the guardrails first.
Before enabling anything, write down your DSA baseline: CPA, conversion volume and top landing pages of the last 90 days. Without a baseline you cannot judge the migration.
Set brand controls and location controls from day one. Since the August 20 update, experiments respect both, so you can test without dropping your guardrails.
Configure URL exclusions for pages that must never receive paid traffic: careers, legal, outdated products, blog posts that do not sell.
Review every AI-generated asset during the first weeks. Edit or remove anything that misstates prices, features or claims.
Compare against your baseline after one or two conversion cycles, not after three days.

The bottom line

AI Max is not optional in the long run: February 2027 closes the DSA door. The real decision is whether you migrate deliberately, with a baseline and guardrails, or get migrated by default in September. The first option costs you an afternoon. The second can cost you a quarter of messy data and unreviewed ads.
